Australian players have may not be as prominent in Europe as they once were, but so far, at least four Socceroos have been a part of Championship teams this year in Europe.
Awer Mabil, FC Midtjylland, Champions of Denmark
Midtjylland dominated the Danish Superliga to claim their third domestic Championship.
Awer Mabil’s European breakthrough continued with the young midfielder featuring in over 30 games for the Danish side during the season and scoring eight goals – equal top in the club. Mabil has become an indispensable player for the club and a fan favourite.
Aziz Behich, İstanbul Başakşehir, Champions of Turkey
İstanbul Başakşehir claimed their first Turkish Championship, breaking the stranglehold of the ‘big three’ in the process. The controversial club won under a cloud of questionable finances and political ties however the Champsionship comes after five previous seasons in the top four.
Behich struggled to find game time for the Champions after signing from PSV in the Netherlands making only five appearances throughout the season.
Tom Rogic, Celtic, Champions of Scotland
Celtic won their ninth consecutive domestic championship in unusual circumstance, taking their overall tally to 51. Although the Championship was never really in doubt, clubs agreed to end the season prematurely at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rogic’s finds himself slightly on the outer at Celtic, making 22 appearances across all competitions and scoring three goals, although the Hoops are expected to keep the Aussie around for at least a couple more seasons.
Daniel Arzani also found himself appearing in a Scottish Cup match but did not break into the first team to compete in the League competition.
Miloš Degenek, Red Star Belgrade, Champions of Serbia
Red Star dominated the domestic competition sealing their 31st title and third in a row.
Degenek played an important role for the team featuring over 30 times across all competitions including the Champions League.
