The Socceroos have defeated Lebanon 2-0 and find themselves on top of their World Cup Qualification group.
Match Summary
The Socceroos got off to a flyer when their early pressure was rewarded by a cross-cum-shot goal in the 5th minute from Keanu Baccus. The goal allowed the Socceroos to control the rest of the game and put Lebanon on the back foot. A 54th minute goal from Kye Rowles off of a corner sealed the result for the Socceroos who have enjoyed an undefeated qualification campaign so far.
Unfortunately for the Socceroos though, injuries to Riley McGree and Jordy Bos slightly soured the outing, with both players potentially out of action for the near term. Australian fans though were no doubt encouraged by the return of Ajdin Hrustic who has been missing from recent matches.
Next qualification steps
Over 27,000 people crammed into Western Sydney Stadium to watch the Socceroos’ Victory, and another 20,000 are expected for the next round match to be held in Canberra. The game will be held in Canberra after Lebanon were forced to relocate their home match. A win for the Socceroos on Tuesday in this fixture will undoubtedly seal their place in the next round of qualification and allow for more experimentation in their line up for the remaining games.
Fans will specifically be hoping to see more convincing attacking play with recent social commentary unconvinced with the recent pairing of Taggart and Yengi up front. It should be noted though that the Socceroos are enjoying a hot run of form. Despite coming up against defensive teams, Australia has only lost one of their previous ten matches.
