Nishan Velupillay enjoys a rare status as a one-club player having only ever represented Melbourne Victory at Senior level.
The boy from the Eastern Suburbs played juniors in the area but went on to represented Victory at NPL level before making his senior debut at A-League level in 2021.
Since then he has become one of the first names on the team sheet playing over 80 games and scoring 8 goals for the Big V.
Last season though the 23 year-old really made a name for himself with 28 appearances and scoring 4 goals in a team that made it all the way to the Grand Final under Tony Popovic.
Popovic now finds himself in the role of Socceroos head coach and his first hand experience with the Youth Victory winger no doubt influenced his decision to select Velupillay in his first Socceroos Squad.
Can we expect Velupillay to earn his first international cap in this window though? Looking at the squad it is unlikely.
With a must win game against China and a high pressure game against Japan upcoming it is likely that Popovic will turn to more experienced players.
Goodwin, Silvera, Arzani and Iranjunda are more likely to play on the wing however Velupillay will undoubtedly treasure this first Socceroos camp experience and may feature as a substitute should he impress during the camp training sessions.
