Melbourne City secure ALW Premiership

Melbourne City have secured the ALW Premiership after defeating Perth away 2-1.

The result marks an exciting end to the premiership season which comprised 22 home and away games, making it the longest ALW season ever.

Sydney FC choke delivers Melbourne City the title

The long season helped deliver last minute drama across the table, with City’s Premiership only possible after Sydney FC lost their final two matches. Sydney FC could have secured the Premiership with a win in Canberra earlier in the week but lost in an upset win to Greens.

The Sky Blues had another chance to claim the Premiership but lost to bitter rivals Melbourne Victory at home in an embarrassing 4-0 defeat in front of over 4,000 fans at Leichhardt Oval. Sydney FC will need to look to the finals now for some silverware and will feel lucky to have kept 11 women on the field after an ugly foul by goalkeeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyman avoided a red card.

Finals locked in

Melbourne Victory on the other hand will have have mixed feeling about their win. Although the win helped deliver Melbourne City the Premiership, it also secured the Victory a finals place.

The result though meant that Western Sydney Wanderers will again miss out on the finals with Newcastle instead claiming the final top six spot after three wins in a row.

The top six finals series will kick off with Western United hosting Newcastle in a repeat of their recent fixture. Western United will be hoping to defeat the Jets who won in their last face off.
